Medium Density Fiberboard: Why is it the "all-rounder" in the home industry?

Release time:

Jul 07,2025

MDF, with its high flatness, strong stability, and outstanding cost-performance ratio, has become an indispensable material in modern home furnishings. When purchasing, focus on environmental protection level, density, brand, and choose moisture-proof or enhanced products based on the usage scenario.

In the field of furniture manufacturing and renovation materials, medium-density fiberboard (MDF) has become a popular choice for designers, factories, and consumers due to its excellent performance. But do you really understand MDF? What scenarios is it suitable for? How to choose high-quality MDF? This article will take you in-depth analysis!

  1. What is MDF?

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is an artificial board made from wood fibers (such as pine, eucalyptus, etc.) that are crushed, dried, glued, and hot-pressed. Its density typically ranges from 600-800kg/m³, with a uniform structure and a fine surface, making it an ideal material between particle board and high-density fiberboard (HDF).

  2. Core advantages of MDF

  1. Smooth surface, suitable for fine processing

MDF fibers are fine, without the issues of natural wood such as knots and uneven grain.

Can be directly sprayed or veneered (such as PVC, wood veneer, melamine finish).

Widely used in products with high surface requirements such as cabinet doors, wall panels, and decorative moldings.

  2. Strong stability, not easy to deform or crack

Natural wood is easily affected by temperature and humidity, while MDF is treated with high temperature and pressure, making it more resistant to deformation than solid wood, especially suitable for furniture manufacturing in underfloor heating environments.

  3. Excellent environmental performance

High-quality MDF uses low formaldehyde adhesives (such as MDI glue).

The formaldehyde emission can reach E0 level (≤0.05mg/m³), far below the national standard (E1 level ≤0.124mg/m³).

Safe for children's furniture and bedroom decoration.

  4. High cost-performance ratio, widely applicable scenarios

Compared to solid wood, MDF is cheaper.

Can achieve various decorative effects such as imitation wood, baking paint, and matte.

  Widely applicable scenarios:

  Furniture: wardrobes, cabinets, bookshelves

Renovation: wall panels, baseboards, door frames

Commercial spaces: display cabinets, hotel decorations

  3. Limitations of MDF and solutions

  1. Weak moisture resistance

Ordinary MDF swells easily when exposed to water.

  Solution:

  Choose moisture-resistant MDF (green label).

Apply edge sealing treatment on the surface.

  2. Load-bearing capacity is not as good as solid wood.

Solution: For load-bearing structures like bookshelves and bed frames, it is recommended to pair with solid wood frames or metal supports.

  4. How to choose high-quality MDF?

  1. Check the environmental grade.

Prioritize E0 level (formaldehyde emission ≤0.05mg/m³).

Look for international certifications such as CARB P2, F★★★★ (Japanese standard).

  2. Measure density and hardness.

High-quality MDF should have a density of over 650kg/m³.

No loose feeling when pressed by hand.

Nails fixed should not easily chip.

  3. Observe the cut surface and surface.

The cut surface should be fine and uniform, without obvious coarse fibers or gaps.

The surface should be flat without bulges.

The veneer should be firmly adhered (can be tested by lightly scratching with a fingernail).

  5. MDF produced by Zurkt Group

Zurkt Group's Tanzania branch specializes in the production of density boards, primarily using pine and eucalyptus.

  1. Environmental grade

Meets national quality certifications from UNBS, TZBS, KEBS.

  2. Density and hardness

  Common specifications are 2440mm*1220mm (4x8 feet), with thicknesses reaching 6, 9, 16, 17.5, 18mm, etc.

Density can generally reach over 700kg/m³, with different density values required for different thicknesses.

Can customize other specifications and thicknesses of medium-density boards according to customer needs.

  3. Core product strength

Equipment and production line: Equipped with internationally advanced production equipment, with its own glue soaking production line, ensuring that all products from the baseboard to melamine paper are self-produced, guaranteeing product quality.

Raw materials: Sourced from Mafinga, East Africa, using high-quality fast-growing forests, eucalyptus, and pine.

Technical experts: Mr. Jin, Mr. Zhong, with over 30 years of technical experience in large-scale manufacturing in China, are well-known experts in the industry.

Strict factory inspection: The first density board testing laboratory in Africa, all products undergo 12 testing indicators, and only those that pass the random inspection are allowed to leave the factory.

MDF, with its high flatness, strong stability, and outstanding cost-performance ratio, has become an indispensable material in modern home furnishing. When purchasing, focus on environmental grade, density, brand, and choose moisture-resistant or enhanced products based on the usage scenario.
